This is taken from ‘The sacred city of Anuradhapura’ by Walisinghe Harischandra. This interesting report made in 1870 by Mr. Leisching the Magistrate of the area is found there.
About 20000 people annually go to Anuradhapura on pilgrimage. There are no enough facilities for accommodation. They put up their tents under the grand trees. At the height of the festival approaches the place be comes full to activity. The people be have in a well disciplined manner. No one ever thinks that some body will try to run away with the money.20000 people come and go annually without a single policeman being here. The people’s decency and peaceful behaviour are unimaginable.

Tropicol Rain Forests

When there is rain and sunshine plants grow faster and form into dense forests. These forests are known as Tropical rain forests. Then rain forests become
the habitat for bird and animals. Tall trees become homes for bird as there is food and shelter.
                                There are very valuable hard wood timber in these forests. Organized timber thieves cut down these trees turn them into timber and
carry them away in the process these unscruplour man destroy the habitat of the bird and animals making them move on to other parts of the rain forest
searching for food and shelter. Then these forests become over crowed. food becomes scarce. As a result the animals begin to roam about in near by villages looking for food. Animals and birds begin to feed to the paddy lands and other cultirations . This   leands to the unending   confrontation   between man and animal leading to tragic ends.
                          The farmers encroach on these forests clear trees burn them and opened up vast stretches of land for cultivation. Withim afew years the land coses its fertility the land dries up as there are no trees the fertile layer of the lant is swept away by the wind. The farmer moves on to an other part
of the forests and continues his destruction. By the year 2000 nearly two thirds of the world’s tropical rain forests were destroyed in thirds of the
world’s tropical rain forests were destroyed in this manner.

Martin Wickramasinghe Museum

Martin wickramasinghe the greatest sri lanka writer of the last century was born in koggala in 1890.
The house in which he was born has been renoveated and from a part of the museum. The late author’s preserved belongings and original furmiture have been well preserved and carefully arranged in the room. The visitor gets the impression that the author his just stepped out for astroll along the koggala beach.
              In the gallery martin wickramasinghe’ s life and times are presented, sketches, souvenirs and awards he had received. Copies of published
words and hand written manuscripts are also found here. All these help to create an imge of the man and write
r and by gone times of the man writer and by gone times. His ashes are intered in a grass corered mound to the right of the house The ‘samadhi’ where
his ases are interred, is symbolic of his ashes are rural culture and his simple life style.
                                         The items on display in themuseum of fojk culture near the house in wich martin wickramasingha was born in clued artifacts related was born include artifacts related to Buddhism, folk religious practices, pottery, and folk dance.
There is also a unigue collection of masks,musical instruments, costumes, jewellery and many agricultural implements and carts of different types.There is an ‘Ambalama’a resting place which is surrounded bystuy trees. There are many varieties of
trees here,some common not so common.
                                           There are many birds that are common, exotic and migrant coming here for food and rest. The place is
enchanting in its varied foliage a fine place to relax and picnic.

Water

Sri Lanka is lucky that she does not have to share water with any other country.
Hence she is able to manage her water resources and minimize environmental hazards
. If we are to preserve the natural beauty of Sri Lanka we have to manage our water resources
well. Sri Lanka is called, the pearl of the Indian Ocean, because of her shape and natural beauty.
There are two aspects to water
management; firstly to allocate water to the environment according to the environmental demands, secondly to
supply the human requirement of water for agriculture, industry, power generation and domestic work. Excessive
removal of water from rivers, tanks and other waterways has exposed bird, animal, fish and plant species to danger.
It also has threatened the livelihood of farmers and fishermen. Many people depent on river water for drinking,cooking,washing
and for various other uses. When the supply of water for irrigation is interrupted, the farmers cannot cultivate their lands and and
inland fishing will not be possible.The flow of water keeps the ecosystem healthy and productive.

Dr. validimir Smakhtin, the principal researcher at The International water Management Institute (IWMI) based in Colombo
points out that the water flow has has to vary at different times of the year, to maintain the good health of the ecosystem.
According to the IWMI the environmental needs are not being met as too much of water is being removed. The policy makers
should pay greater attention to the over exploitation of fresh water. They must recognize the need to allocate water for the maintenance
of the environment. The water wastage must be controlled. They must also monitor the flow of water and pay greater attention to
environmental effects. Finally they must rake steps to maintation the ecosystem.

The Arugambay Beach

Arugambay lies about 4 kilo metres from pothuvil between the lahugala National park and the kumana bird sanctuary.
On our way to pothuvil we drove through the lahugala National park. There in the tank, we saw a herd of wild elephants playfully
splashing water, gripping their trunks and nuzzling each other. The bigger ones were standing on the bank as sentinels keeping guard.
We saw a flock of peacocks dancing and fluttering their bright feathers. The sea coast has long stretches of Sunday, silvery beaches.
The beaches. The beaches in Arugambay are free from touts, hawkers and loafers. It is an ideal place for sea bathing for children
and adults. We can Walk into the sea for miles. Hundreds of fishing boats are seen on the sea and beached around the bay.
We had the delightful experience of watching the sunrise and the sunset from the Arugambay bridge.
As our teacher mentioned , I Was very particular to observe the sunrise and the sunset. I must say that it was magnificent.
We stayed there for days. We didn’t spend a single idle hour. This place has so much to offer to the tourists,
students, nature lovers, bird-watchers and every one. I Wish that everyone of you would visit this place some day or other and enjoy
the bliss
of this paradise.

A old dog speaks

Old age comes on all. Look at me now. My sight is weak. and I hear only loud noises. Patches have appeared on my coat of fur. You should have seen me then, an agile, nimble, clever pussy cat, wearing a soft thick fur coat. Other cats envied my bushy tail. My master called me ‘beauty’ ,I would have been a real beauty. My place was a cushion in the sitting room. I loved to sun bathe in the morning watching birds flitting from branch to branch. They never made friends with me. I never knew why. Now . they come near me. Not only that, some peck on my tail. May be cause my tail is only skin and bone now. When I Was young, My play mates were rats and vermin. They never could play long but fell lifeless. My master praised me. Today I can hardly walk. My master is still kind to me. He knows that Ican not dogest hard bones and I am fed with soft meat, fish and biscuits, I spend my life between sleeping and eating.

Sri Lanka is our country.It is an inland in the indion ocean.From north to south it is 432 kilonetres long.From west to East it is 224 kilometres wide
.Beautiful blue mountuns add beauty to our Sri Lanka.Piduruthalagala is the highest mountain in lanka.Piduruthalagala is 2524 metres high
.There are four main rivers in Sri Lanka.The lougest river is Mahaveli. It is over 300 kilometres long.
We Can See Cascading Water Falls.Dunhida Diyaluma are two of them.
There aregame reserues Animals and birds roam here lreely Yala and Vilpaththuva are two of them.we can boast of a very ancient history.
Our ancient king like paracramabahu and Dutugemuny and thers built wonderful pulares and temples.Today we can See only the ruins.
Tourists come for and wide to see these Beautiful flower tree, bird,and animal odorn our country.
The climate is very suitable for cultivation.We don’t suffer from intense heat and cold.
We have a tropical climatein this climate flowers grow well. We our main can see it when we go to the peradeniya and Hakgala, Botanical gardens.
Tea, Rabber, coconut are our and cold. We have a tropical climatein this climate flowers grow well.We our main exports.
The textile industiy too brings us a good in came. Long ags our country was aslf sufficieat country.
So Sri Lanka was callad the granary of the east. Tourists call it a paradise be cause it is such a beautiful country.
We are proud of our country.
